Creating heavy QML elements (many repeated gradients) crashes application

Creating a heavy QML element (many repeated gradients) crashes the application, presumably due to low memory. Can this somehow be handled more gracefully?

This was originally reported to QTCOMPONENTS but can be reproduced using pure QML:
