Because both the "file open" and "settings" dialogs cover most of the screen, it is not a good user experience for video playback to continue when they are popped up. Since (at least on the 5800) the video stack does not appear to automatically pause video in response to a dialog being drawn on top of the video region (which it should know about via a DSA abort), the only way to fix this is to modify the application.
Note that the video should be paused in this scenario only when the "small screen" flag is set.
