The current Maemo 5 QGeoAreaMonitor backend is implemented such that it could be used on any platform that has a QGeoPositionInfoSource backend.
As such it could be improved and turned into a default backend for the platforms which don't have platform support for distance based triggering.
See http://bugreports.qt.nokia.com/browse/QTMOBILITY-168 for more information on the issues with the current Maemo 5 QGeoAreaMonitor. Once that bug is fixed it should be trivial to implement this change.
