setXXX methods visible in public API

There are setXXX methods visible in the public API. It woud be good to have them hidden.

One possible way this could happen is for each of the classes to have a sub-class that implements the setXXX methods. Client code is prevented from seeing these methods while backend code is still able to call the methods.

This can't be done without breaking binary compatibility.
