make confclean does not work

At the end of configuring, it tells me:

To reconfigure, run 'make confclean' and 'configure'.

but when I try:

~/builds/qt5 $> $make confclean
make: *** No rule to make target `confclean'. Stop.

I should expect make confclean to work, or the message to not be there.
