Special characters don't display properly in QTextEdit

Using example examples/qtbase/widgets/mainwindows/mdi

1 - create a new page
2 - select menu Edit->Special Characters
3 - insert some special characters (an arrow showing a hand for example)

problem => the character displayed on the page is square box

4 - save the file
5 - open the file with textedit, the special characters show correctly
