Annoying vanishing completion popup

Since shortly (a0faf279d5fa11f3e50c699f7c7056326f069e1f) the completion popup vanishes when typing a name and that has only one completion item.
This is tremendously annoying.

When I type "symbol->name" and then enter, it will not complete the item to "symbol->name()" but instead insert a new line.

I'm told that this behavior was introduced to circumvent other annoying behavior since the completion automatically pops up now.
I'm not sure how to solve these seemingly conflicting needs, but I also don't know in what way it was annoying without the automatic vanishing.
Perhaps it should not vanish if the completion item is a function, or perhaps it should only vanish if it appeared with the delayed autopopup.
What do other IDEs do?
